In Situ Burn Testing of Weathered and Emulsified Crude Oils

چکیده
ABSTRACT This paper investigates the ignitability and effectiveness of burning crude oil spills at sea with respect to type oil, weathering time, seawater emulsion content. In event an or fuel spill sea, in situ can be a practical method removing preventing it from reaching vulnerable coastlines. However, specific chemistry its resulting behavior dictates how well this works. order understand behavior, Santa Barbara Channel oils were tested burned combinations fresh, weathered, seawater-emulsified discrete ratios. A cone calorimeter was used monitor time ignition, mass loss, heat release rate, smoke production for laboratory-scale burn tests. Weathering generally increased ignition but also changed miscibility water; both released efficiency. Emulsions fractions below approximately 20 % found improve rate efficiency compared oil-only burns; suggesting that some water emulsification benefit burning. The results indicate targeted approach degree expand window opportunity burns.

Biodegradability of commercial and weathered diesel oils
This work aimed to evaluate the capability of different microorganisms to degrade commercial diesel oil in comparison to a weathered diesel oil collected from the groundwater at a petrol station. Two microbiological methods were used for the biodegradability assessment: the technique based on the redox indicator 2,6 -dichlorophenol indophenol (DCPIP) and soil respirometric experiments using bio...
متن کاملToxic effect of water-soluble fractions of crude, refined, and weathered oils on the growth of a marine bacterium.
The water-soluble fractions of three crude and two refined oils reduced the growth rate and maximum cell density of the marine bacterium Serratia marinorubra grown in batch culture. The weathering of a crude and a refined oil was simulated in the laboratory. The water-soluble fractions remaining from this process were more toxic to S. marinorubra than were the parent unweathered oils. Increases...
متن کاملDetermination of Metal Ions in Crude Oils
Crude oil is complex mixture of hydrocarbons that occur in the earth in liquid form. It constitutes an important part of primary fossil fuels. Crude oil was used as a medicine by the ancient Egyptians, presumably as wound dressing, liniment and laxative. Several centuries later, Spanish explorers discovered crude oil in Cuba, Mexico, Boliva and Peru. The industrial revolution brought increasing...
